I’ve always been impressed by the push of men and women who create mods and ROM hacks to their favourite games. It is produced by fans, for fans, and that is just a beautiful thing.
Nintendo is known for being hard on ROM hacking communities, but they survive thanks to the love every one these creators. And think about Super Mario 64, arguably among the best platformers from Nintendo’s library… it’s got a great deal on the market.
I’ve recently become hacks for Nintendo’s classic Super Mario 64 and that I can’t help but respect the work put in to them.
It is especially impressive thinking about the weird and frankly antique way the match is coded, and that’s to be anticipated from a pioneer of the 64-bit era.
I will do my own part to fan the fires of ROM hacking and then share what I believe would be the 10 top Super Mario 64 ROM hacks ever produced.
10.
A pretty good option to test ROM hacks and choose whether it’s for you is Kampel64’s SM64: The Green Stars.
It adds many levels and showcases a great deal of what’s possible through these modifications.
It has 130 stars to accumulate throughout many customized degrees. Some of that you will have to find by exploring the overworld with a Detective’s lens, since the founder made it a point to hide every secret perfectly.
The reason why it is higher in the ranking is that the grade of degree design changes more than it should.read about it https://romshub.com/roms/nintendo-ds/new-super-mario-bros-psyfer-usa from Our Articles
Many areas are so easy they’re dull, whereas others require a few hyper-specific trick jumps and feats just an expert could pull off without even stressful 200 times.
9.
If you’d prefer to begin with something more ambitious then contemplate SM64: Kirby Edition by creator Dudaw.
This hack replaces the traditional red-capped plumber with the adorable Kirby.
It was the first complete character hack released on SM64, and despite the practice being more common today I would say the polish level remains striking.
Not only can Kirby move and creep as the personality should. But additionally power-ups are altered to flip the pink pull into a Boo or even a Thwomp, mimicking his copy ability.
You can even ride Kirby’s signature Warp Star on some levels. Neat!

Anyone who’s been following the SM64 ROM hacking scene is acquainted with Kaze Emanuar, the hard-working behind lots of the very challenging and astonishing hacks for your timeless game.
It has less scope than some of the others but exactly the same final quality.
It plays much like Super Mario 3D Land, including 33 new levels that are much more linear than the ones existing in vanilla.
Mario also has a few new moves to oppose them. Notably, a Butt Bounce along with an Aerial Dive, which you’ll find remarkably useful.
7. Super Mario 64: Star Revenge Redone
Developed by ROM hacking character BroDute and many collaborators, the Star Revenge series is just one of the very prolific hack series in life. Counting more than six main releases and a slew of remakes.
SM64: Star Revenge Redone is the latest version of this original hack. It comprises over 125 new stars to collect over 13 distinct levels.
What makes this hack unique, other than the surreal humor and self-referencing jokes, is its own complex lore and also an overarching narrative you’d need to play every launch to understand.
If you wish to embark on that quest, this is the place to begin.
6.
For something remarkably less complex we have Kaze Emanuar’s Super Mario Bros. 64, which brings back the side-scrolling platformer allure of old Mario games like Super Mario World.
But left in SM64’s 3D engine. Wonderful, right?
I really like how the camera angle is tilted just at the ideal diagonal angle so you can enjoy depth without abandoning the side-scrolling perspective entirely.
You’re able to play as many characters from the Mario world such as Luigi, Wario, fan-favorite Waluigi, and Mario himself.
5.
Sometimes all we are searching for is a more challenging experience from our all-time favourite games.
If that is you, think about Super Mario 74 by Lugmilors.
It features 120 new stars to become in its many custom degrees, all of which pose a considerably increased difficulty than your normal vanilla SM64 situation.
This includes most boss fights, which have added challenges like needing to swing Bowser greater to reach the bombs.
As soon as you clear it you can go on to play Super Mario 74 Extreme Edition, and it will be a more absurd, Kaizo-level challenge.
4.
Considering that the artisanal character of ROM hacking generally, I’d say most of these games have… varying levels of quality, to say the very least.
Yet one of the most frequently great hacks about is NebulaSM64’s Super Mario 64 Sapphire, a brief but sweet encounter consisting of 30 stars spread across six incredible levels.
And these levels feature a number of the most gorgeous landscapes ever seen on this 64-bit engine.
If you’re trying to find a quick Mario fix using a twist on SM64 then this is it.
3.
I believe in demonstrating respect and admiration for initiating attempts in any field.
This large ROM hack was among the very first ones with some mainstream appeal outside of the hardcore ROM hacking network.
It features 130 celebrities to collect in certain exceptional amounts, introduces new enemies, and contains a revamped soundtrack which gives it the feel of a legitimate sequel.
Thinking about the extreme focus on tight platforming, in addition, it is important to notice all of the work put into making a more favorable camera compared to the first.
2.
Another timeless hack which revamps several essential technical aspects in the game is Frauber’s SM64: The Missing Stars.
It includes a day/night bicycle, a better camera, and a bunch of other tweaks which improve gameplay.
You may also go through its ten levels as Luigi if you are tired of their plumper brother.
With upgraded managers, new enemies, and remixed music which comprises some original compositions made particularly for the hack, it seems like an entirely fresh spin on the SM64 formulation.
1.
It has tons of custom resources, new supervisors made from scratch, and even new power-ups. All really cool things, such as a Yoshi which you can ride and Super Mario Sunshine’s FLUDD, among other items.
This match is really a technical marvel!
Every one of the newest degrees is completely different from what we’re utilised to viewing. And getting every one of the 130 new celebrities presents several specific challenges.
There is even a level at which you will have to play with Mario Party games to acquire the coveted body!
Sure, it can get a tad wonky here and now there. And it’s not without its fair share of bugs.
But that’s to be expected of such an enormous undertaking, and also a thing you can generally dismiss because this rom hack is SM64’s following level.
