Under MACRS, the capitalized cost of tangible property is recovered by annual deductions for depreciation over a specified life. The lives are specified in the Internal Revenue Service’s Tax Co de. The deduction for depreciation is computed under one of two methods at the election of the taxpayer. The double-declining balance method is a type of accelerated depreciation method that calculates a higher depreciation charge in the first year of an asset’s life and gradually decreases depreciation expense in subsequent years.
