It was easy for me to swap Pokémon in and out of the party and still get them to a capable level in little time. The main problem is that Sword and Shield are still just too familiar.

There are dozens of quality of life improvements across the board, many of which made me feel like I was having a better time than ever just enjoying the journey. This game is approachable and enjoyable for absolutely everyone, while still offering that extra layer of depth that Pokémon fans crave. If you’re a hardcore collector, you’ll be happy to know that breeding, fossils, and competitive gameplay all have the kind of depth and focus that’ll keep you playing for dozens of hours. In practice, many of the complaints you heard about Pokémon Sword and Shield before release aren’t as bad as some people made out.
It’s something that has been improved upon with each new game, but it’s perfected here. Couple all of that with what feels like very spotty online connections, and performance drops when online in the Wild Area, and there are a fair few downsides. Despite them all though, Pokémon Sword and Shield is a great Pokémon game, one well worth experiencing, but certainly not the best of the series. I wanted a bigger generational leap, perhaps even a game that resembled the likes of Dragon Quest XI in some ways, but this isn’t quite that.
That said, I’m glad Sword and Shield make the stat differences of nature clearly visible for the first time, and offers ways to change those natures, even if that’s locked to post-game. The design of all the Pokémon in the Galar region is where the new entries shine. While there isn’t a full National Dex to complete, the new forms and creatures all coalesce into this incredible new pool of beasts to choose from. Better yet, the completely new monsters are some of the best we’ve ever had, and the selection you get from the get-go is almost overwhelming. I had a full team of varied types before I even got to the first gym.
- The pro version costs $19.99 and includes image stabilization, voice over support, and visual waveform.
- This means that after downloading it, you get access to all the features without the need for a paid upgrade.
- Whichever way you create a custom video project, you’ll end up on a screen with a project library, video preview, and storyboard pane.
- If you choose not to update to the pro version, then technical support costs $9.99 for one month, or $14.99 for a year.
- Advanced users may find features a little limited; import and render times can be a little slow.
This is a great RPG adventure – and somehow, that feels like a backhanded compliment, because every Pokémon game should be one of the best RPGs in the world. But this game also feels like the most linear Pokémon game in a long while. Routes are linear, and to progress through any part of the game you’ll have to be shepherded to NPCs to trigger cutscenes, lest roadblocks stand in the way of the direction you actually want to go in. More than once I found myself heading down a route happily, only to find progress blocked because I didn’t visit a restaurant to trigger a cutscene or something. Through the story you are led by the nose, and the EXP share mechanic means that you won’t even find yourself struggling much to build a powerful party.
With the exception of The Wild Area, Pokémon Sword and Shield looks big, zip file free but the games don’t quite feel big, and for an expensive blockbuster franchise, I really want to be able to get lost. The Switch is perfect for Pokémon, but because I can play it at home or on the go, I’m gonna be a Pokémon Master before the week is over. Sword and Shield feel like proof of concept, but there’s another stage of evolution left for console Pokémon games.
Pokémon Sword & Shieldare also the most controversialPokémongame in the franchise’s history. There’s still an incredible 400 of them to be found, however, so it’s not like the games are really lacking for content in that regard.
Battling is important, but it’s clear that’s not really the focus ofPokémon Sword & Shield in the same way it has been for previous generations. Gym Challenges, whether they be obstacle courses or quiz shows, take center stage as players attempt to gain their badges and become the Pokémon Champion, and they’re a blast. The story is light-hearted fare, but it makes for some compelling characters, and a world that is inviting. Once again,Pokémon Sword & Shield feels like the type of game that could reignite thePokémoncraze in the same way it kicked off withRed & Blue so many years ago.
